Blog update: writing portfolio

I’ve added a portfolio page to the blog, for a listing of articles I’ve written for various web sites and publications. This currently includes articles for Universe Today and Examiner.com, as well as soon-to-be-added ones for All About Space, a new publication from the publisher of How It Works magazine.

I’ve also reformatted the blog to focus on my writing business, rather than a more general personal blog. You can still follow me via the various social media links to get all of my other updates of course.

Blog update: new theme and other things

I’ve updated the blog with a new WordPress theme (one of my new favourites, Brunelleschi); I’m going for more of a classic look, simple and clean, which is a nice fit for a writer’s blog. I’m still tinkering with it a bit, but this is the basic idea. It also helps to keep it more distinct from my other blog The Meridiani Journal.

I’ve updated the social sharing buttons at the bottom of posts to include Google+, as well as the previous Twitter, Facebook, email and print.

I’ve also updated my contact info to include FaceTime and Skype.

The stylized last name in the blog header reflects my Swedish family ancestry, on my grandfather’s side.

Universe Today

I’ve also now started doing some writing for Universe Today! Exactly what I’ve been wanting to do, as I focus on space exploration and astronomy, and UT is one of the most respected and longest-running web sites of that genre that there is.

My first article is here, an update on the unusual long channels in the Hesperia Planum region of Mars.

Of couse, I will keep writing for my blog The Meridiani Journal too, and for Examiner.com; there will sometimes be crossover between those two, but articles for UT are exclusively original, although I can do a summary on TMJ and link to the full article.

Space Exploration Examiner

I’m doing some writing now for Examiner.com (affiliated with NowPublic), focusing on my primary interest of space exploration. My page is Space Exploration Examiner, in the news / science & space categories, listed under National (some writers’ pages are National and some are Local, for specific cities). It will complement my blog The Meridiani Journal, but not replace it, and is a part of my branching out into doing more freelance writing. I just posted my first article about the many space and astronomy-related apps now available for iPhone and iPad, and will post more soon. Examiner.com will also be redesigning their website in October, and a wide variety of subjects are covered by different writers.

Blog update: WordPress.org, new domain name, etc.

I’ve moved the blog from WordPress.com to WordPress.org, which has many more features, options and added stability and security. The layout is still essentially the same, although I upgraded the theme from Twenty Ten to Twenty Eleven.  I looked at dozens of others, but stlll came back to this as my favourite. Simple and clean, but with lots of modification options.

Please also note the new domain name / url: paulscottanderson.com.

I’m still tweaking things a bit in terms of plugins and widgets, but the basic look is done.

Posts now have a “comments bubble” in the upper right corner for adding comments (and comment count) or you can still do it using the link below each post, as well as a “like” button. There are also sharing buttons for Twitter, Facebook and Google+, the primary social services, as well as email and print, below each post. Also follow and subscription widgets for Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Referral Key, Picasa Web Albums, YouTube, rss and email in the sidebar. I’ve also added widgets for the latest Twitter updates and YouTube videos, as well as an animated category cloud widget in the sidebar.

Please also note that since the previous default email subscription service with WordPress.com isn’t part of WordPress.org where the blog is now hosted, I’ve changed email subscriptions back to Google’s FeedBurner service, which also publishes the RSS feed, and is still easy to use and reliable. If you were previously subscribed to the old service, please resubscribe to the new one. Email updates are still basically the same, just whenever a new post is added to the blog.

I’ve also added Google ads as a source of extra revenue to help support the blog (when clicked), but trying to not clutter posts or pages too much at the same time.

Note: There seems to be an issue with the Google+ share button not displaying properly with older versions of the Firefox browser and possibly the Internet Explorer browser. From what I’ve read, this is a fairly common problem, but seems to be ok with the Safari and Google Chrome browsers.

Welcome

Welcome to my new personal web site. I had started this before as just a brief page about myself, but now it is set up primarily as a blog, similar in format to my other one, The Meridiani Journal, also on WordPress.

You can also follow me on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and see my photos and videos on Picassa Web Albums and YouTube. This blog serves as a central place for my updates, but is ideal for those who don’t use those other social media web sites, and you can also get the blog updates by RSS feed or email (use subscription form in right-hand sidebar).

The stylization of my last name in the header is a reference to my Swedish family ancestry, on my grandfather’s side, and I’ve always had an affinity for Swedish culture… but also, Happy Canada Day!
